Brief
description of the notified legal text
Copyright protects the work of authors such as writers, composers,
lyricists, filmmakers and visual artists. In addition to copyright, we also
have the so-called "neighbouring rights". These rights give
protection to the efforts and performances of performing artists, music
producers, film producers and broadcasters. The protection is similar to that
of copyright, which is why we call them "neighbouring" rights. As
with copyright, no formalities are required to obtain neighbouring rights.
Neighbouring rights are established internationally in the 1961 Rome
Convention. How the rights of performing artists, producers of sound
recordings, broadcasting organizations and film producers are regulated in
the Netherlands can be found in the Neighbouring Rights Act of 1993.
