description of the notified legal text
The European
Union Free Trade Agreement Legislation Amendment Act 2024 amended the
Geographical Indications (Wine and Spirits) Registration Act 2006 to, inter alia:
a) rename the legislation as the
Geographical Indications Registration Act 2006;
b) register 2,197 European geographical
indications (GIs) required to be protected in New Zealand under the New Zealand European Free Trade
Agreement;
c) extend the scope of protection for
registered GIs to include transliterations of registered GIs; and
d) set out new civil and administrative
enforcement measures, procedures and remedies to address misuse of registered GIs, including providing
border protection measures consistent with
Articles 51 to 60 of the WTO TRIPS Agreement.
