Council for Trade in Goods - Meeting of 9 – 10 April 2025 - Follow-up note from the outgoing Chairperson

FOLLOW-UP NOTE FROM THE OUTGOING CHAIRPERSON OF
THE COUNCIL FOR TRADE IN GOODS (CTG)

MEETING OF 9–10 APRIL 2025

1.1.  This document has been prepared under the responsibility of the outgoing Chairperson of the Council for Trade in Goods (hereinafter "CTG", or "the Council") with a view to implementing the Council's agreement[1] by providing a follow‑up note to this formal meeting, and in preparation of the next formal meeting of the Council, which has been tentatively scheduled for 7–8 July 2025.

1._   Remarks by the Chairperson:

2._   Decisions taken at the meeting:

1._      Under Agenda Item 2.2, the Council took note of document _G/C/W/859 on the "Notifications Status of Regular/Periodic and One‑Time Only Notifications in the Goods Area (1995‑2024) – Report by the Secretariat". In addition, Members indicated their willingness for the Council to play a coordinating role with a view to improving the status of such notifications. The incoming CTG Chair will write to the Chairpersons of the Subsidiary Bodies and request them to take into account the new information and discuss what can be done to improve the status of the notification requirements that they oversee, and to report back to the Council before the end of the year.

2._      Under Agenda Item 3, "Appointment of Officers to the Subsidiary Bodies of the Council for Trade in Goods", the Chairperson reported that although there was not yet consensus on the slate of names, she was optimistic that a solution would be found in the coming days. The Council agreed to suspend the agenda item and to reconvene when a solution is found.

3._      Under Agenda Item 4, "Future Work of the Council", Members gave their initial consideration to document _JOB/CTG/64, a "Draft Decision on the Recording of the Resolution of Trade Concerns". The Council agreed to hold consultations on this issue and Members were asked to submit specific textual modifications to the Secretariat no later than Friday, 25 April, so that a revised draft version of the draft Decision could be prepared.

4._      Under Agenda Item 44, "Election of the Chairperson of the Council for Trade in Goods", the Council elected H.E. Ambassador Mr Gustavo LUNAZZI (Argentina) as its new Chairperson for the period 2025‑2026.

The provisional dates of upcoming meetings of the Council are currently described in the tentative calendar of meetings (_JOB/CTG/63/Rev.1). A regularly updated list of such information is available via the WTO Calendar of meetings and the Council for Trade in Goods gateway.

 

4._   Key dates for the upcoming meeting:

5._   Guidance on how to add items to the agenda of the next meeting

_Members can add items to the agenda in two ways:

1._         Directly through the Collaborative Agenda section of the eAgenda[2]; or

2._             By sending an email to the CTG team (Roy.Santana@wto.orgArti.Daswani@wto.org and Craig.James@wto.org). For transparency, the Secretariat will also include any such request in the eAgenda.

6._   Agreed items reverted to by the Council, and standing items

At the upcoming meeting, the Council will consider the following standing agenda item:

1._        Notification of Regional Trade Agreements.
