The following communication, dated and
received on 27 June 2024, is being circulated at the request of the delegation of
the United Kingdom.

On 25 June 2024, South Africa notified the WTO
Committee on Safeguards under Articles 9 and 12.4 of the WTO Agreement on
Safeguards before taking a provisional safeguard measure on hot-rolled steel
products.[1]
The United Kingdom requests consultations with South
Africa pursuant to Article 12.4 of the WTO Agreement on Safeguards as soon as
possible, as a Member having a substantial interest as an exporter of the
products concerned.
The aim of the consultations is, inter alia,
to exchange views and seek clarification regarding the measure and reaching an
understanding on ways to achieve the objectives set out in Article 8.1 of the
WTO Agreement on Safeguards.
The United Kingdom suggests holding the
consultations as soon as possible and looks forward to a positive response by South
Africa in order to set a mutually convenient date and venue for these
consultations.
The United
Kingdom reserves all its rights under the WTO Agreements.
