Brief description
of the Agreement:
The
modernized Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA), signed on September 22,
2023, maintains the terms of market access for goods provided in its
predecessor, the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (2017 CUFTA), which was
signed on July 11, 2016[1],
and entered into force on August 1, 2017.
The
modernized CUFTA includes new chapters on cross-border trade in services;
financial services; investments; temporary entry for business persons;
telecommunications; trade and gender; trade and small and medium-sized
enterprises; trade and Indigenous peoples; development and administration of
measures; and good regulatory practices, as well as a list of non-conforming
measures for cross-border trade in services and investment.
It also
features updated chapters on digital trade; rules of origin; competition
policy; designated monopolies and state-owned enterprises; government
procurement; environment; labour; and transparency, anti-corruption, and
responsible business conduct.
Upon the date
of entry into force of the modernized CUFTA, the 2017 CUFTA will be
terminated, and the Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the
Government of Canada for the Promotion and Protection of Investments, signed
on October 24, 1994, will be suspended.
