Statement Circulated by the Right Honourable Margaret Beckett MP,
President of the Board of Trade
On behalf of the United Kingdom, I would like to thank you for your work as Chairman of this Second Conference of the World Trade Organization and through you to express our gratitude to the Government of the Swiss Federation for its organization and hospitality. We also thank Director General Ruggiero and all the staff of the WTO for their excellent work in preparing this Conference.
The United Kingdom sees this Conference as significant for further strengthening the rules based multilateral system and its dispute settlement mechanism which is indivisible from the continuing importance of trade liberalization and economic growth, improving living standards and new job creation across the world.
