Description of content: The Australian Government Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, is consulting on a 'New Vehicle Efficiency Standard' for light passenger and commercial vehicles supplied by manufacturers to Australia from 2025. This standard is intended to set a sales weighted average CO2 target for vehicle manufacturers supplying vehicles to Australia, along similar lines to standards adopted by the United States, European Union and New Zealand. The consultation Impact Analysis evaluates the costs and benefits of three possible approaches with varying levels of stringency.

This notification is to provide early notice of this upcoming measure and provide the opportunity for Members to make comments on the consultation Impact Analysis. An addendum notification will be issued in the near future to provide further detail on the proposed legislation to implement this measure, once it is introduced in the Australian Parliament. A full comment period will be provided with this future notification and there will be the opportunity for those comments to be taken into consideration in finalisation of the measure.

Objective and rationale, including the nature of urgent problems where applicable: The transport sector currently accounts for 21 per cent of Australia's domestic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with light passenger and commercial vehicles accounting for the majority of these emissions. The proposed measure is intended to support the achievement of Australia's updated Nationally Determined Contribution under Article 4 of the Paris Agreement.; Protection of the environment
