Brazil –
Certain Measures Concerning Taxation and Charges
Request to Join Consultations
Communication
from the European Union
The following communication, dated 16 July 2015,
from the delegation of the European Union to the delegation of Brazil, the
delegation of Japan and to the Chairperson of the Dispute Settlement Body, is
circulated in accordance with Article 4.11 of the DSU.
_______________
Following
the request for consultations of Japan that was circulated to the WTO Members
on 9 July 2015 (WT/DS497/1), and pursuant to paragraph 11 of Article
4 of the Understanding on Rules and Procedures Governing the
Settlement of Disputes (DSU), the European Union hereby notifies the
Government of Brazil, the Government of Japan and the Dispute Settlement Body of
its desire to join the consultations requested by Japan in DS497, in light of
its substantial trade interest in this dispute.
The
European Union's substantial trade interest to participate in these
consultations is justified by the fact that almost a quarter of EU exports to
the Brazilian market are affected by the measures in dispute. Brazil's
automobiles, information and communication technology and automation products
compete in the world's market with European Union products. Moreover, this
dispute closely resembles the dispute launched by the European Union on 19
December 2013, Brazil — Certain Measures Concerning
Taxation and Charges (DS472) which attests to the substantial trade
interest of the European Union to participate in these consultations.
The
European Union looks forward to being informed of the date and venue of the
consultations.
