Request to Join Consultations

Communication from the United States

The following communication, dated 7 June 2012, from the delegation of the United States to the delegation of Argentina, the delegation of the European Union and to the Chairperson of the Dispute Settlement Body, is circulated in accordance with Article 4.11 of the DSU.

_______________

This concerns the request for consultations by the European Union on Argentina – Measures Affecting the Importation of Goods, circulated on May 30, 2012 (WT/DS438/1).  My authorities have instructed me to notify the consulting Members and the Dispute Settlement Body of the desire of the United States to be joined in these consultations, pursuant to Article 4.11 of the Understanding on Rules and Procedures Governing the Settlement of Disputes

The United States has a substantial trade interest in these consultations.  U.S. goods account for a substantial share of Argentina's imports,[1] and the United States is a major supplier of various of the products subject to measures cited in the request for consultations.

[1] From 2009 to 2011, the average yearly value of Argentine imports from the United States was USD 6.4 billion, which represents approximately 12 percent of Argentine imports over that period.
