United States - Anti-Dumping Act of 1916 - Proposed Modification of the Reasonable Period of Time under Article 21.3 of the DSU

UNITED STATES – ANTI-DUMPING ACT OF 1916

Proposed Modification of the Reasonable Period of Time

Under Article 21.3 of the DSU

On 12 July 2001, the Chairman of the Dispute Settlement Body received the following communication from the Permanent Mission of the United States.

_______________

With regard to the disputes "United States - Anti-dumping Act of 1916" (WT/DS136 and WT/DS162), the United States proposes that the "reasonable period of time" for implementation of the recommendations and rulings of the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) be modified so as to expire on 31 December 2001, or on the date on which the current session of the U.S. Congress adjourns, whichever is earlier.  The United States believes that such an extension of time would promote a principal aim of the dispute settlement system, which is to provide mutually satisfactory solutions to disputes.  The United States is consulting with the European Communities and Japan regarding this proposal.

The United States requests that the DSB approve this proposal at its meeting on 24 July 2001.
