                                                       Communication from Peru

        The following communication, dated 19 June 1997, from the Permanent Mission of Peru to the Permanent Mission of Chile, the Permanent Delegation of the European Commission and to the Dispute Settlement Body, is circulated in accordance with Article 4.11 of the DSU.

        I wish to advise you that, pursuant to Article 4 of the Understanding on Rules and Procedures Governing the Settlement of Disputes of the World Trade Organization, the Government of Peru has today requested to be joined in the consultations which the European Community, through its communication of 11 June 1997 (document WT/DS87/1), has requested with Chile concerning the Special Sales Tax on spirits in that country.
