Brief description of the Agreement:

The United Kingdom and Ghana's previous preferential trading relationship was governed by the Stepping Stone Economic Partnership Agreement between Ghana, of the one part, and the European Community and its Member States, of the other part ("the EU‑Ghana Agreement"). Please see document series: WT/REG382. The Economic Partnership Agreement between the West African States, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), of the one part, and the European Union and its Members States, of the other part ("the EU-West Africa Agreement") was signed by the UK and Ghana in December 2014 but has not entered into effect.

The Interim Trade Partnership Agreement between the Republic of Ghana, of the one part, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, of the other part ("the Agreement"), takes the EU-West Africa Agreement as its basis and replicates the effects of the EU-Ghana Agreement.

The Agreement establishes a free trade area for trade in goods, within the meaning of Article XXIV of the GATT 1994. Preferential treatment under the Agreement will be provisionally applied by both parties as of 5th March 2021.

Provisions on trade in goods include provisions on rules of origin and preferential tariffs. It also contains provisions on customs and trade facilitation, technical barriers to trade, and sanitary and phytosanitary measures, development cooperation as well as institutional provisions.
