NOTIFICATION of regional trade agreement

Parties to the Agreement: The Southern African Customs Union Member States (Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia and South Africa) and Mozambique of the one part;

and United Kingdom of the other part.

Date of signature: 9 October 2019 (United Kingdom, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia) and 16 October 2019 (South Africa)

Date(s) of entry into Force: 1 January 2021

Brief description of the Agreement: 

The trading relationship between the United Kingdom and Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, and South Africa was previously governed by the Economic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and its Member States, of the one part, and the SADC EPA States, of the other part ("the EU-SADC EPA," See document series: WT/REG381).

 

The Economic Partnership Agreement between the Southern African Customs Union Member States and Mozambique, of the one part, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, of the other part ("the Agreement") is based on the provisions within the EU-SADC EPA.

 

The Agreement establishes a free trade area for trade in goods, within the meaning of Article XXIV of the GATT 1994.

 

It contains provisions on development cooperation, trade defence, dispute settlement, institutional provisions as well as protocols on rules of origin and geographical indications.
