Request to Join Consultations

Communication from Chile

The following communication, dated 26 January 2018, from the delegation of Chile to the delegation of Canada, the delegation of Australia and to the Chairperson of the Dispute Settlement Body, is circulated in accordance with Article 4.11 of the DSU.





Pursuant to Article 4.11 of the Understanding on Rules and Procedures Governing the Settlement of Disputes (DSU), the Government of Chile hereby notifies the Government of Canada, the Government of Australia and the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) that it wishes to join the consultations with Canada that were requested by Australia, in its communication circulated to members on 16 January 2018, in Canada – Measures Governing the Sale of Wine (WT/DS537/1).


As an exporting Member of wines, Chile has a substantial trade interest in these consultations. In 2016, wine exports from Chile to Canada reached $ 96 million US dollars. Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta together represent 91% of the value and 93% of the volume of Chilean wine imported from Canada. In terms of the value of imports, Chile is the fifth wine importer into the Canadian market.


Chile looks forward to confirmation of receipt and acceptance of this request to join the consultations and advice regarding the timing and venue for the consultations.
