Vice President Lai
Ching-te says that strengthening relations between Taiwan and the United States
is a top priority. Lai was speaking on Monday in a pre-recorded speech on the
50th anniversary of the establishment of the Taiwanese Association of America.
Lai says that
strengthening ties with the United States is more important than ever amid
rapid changes in global geopolitics. He says Taiwan needs to work closely with
the United States as democratic countries to face up to pressure from China.
Lai says he hopes
that the Taiwanese community in the United States can help in enhancing
economic, social and cultural exchanges between the two sides. He says he also
hopes that the Taiwanese Association of America can continue to work with
Taiwan’s government for the future of Taiwan.
Meanwhile, Lai
says that the association has become Taiwan’s most supportive and influential
overseas organization. He says that he is thankful to overseas Taiwanese in the
United States for assisting US doctors and nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lai says Taiwan is
already recognized by the international community as a success story for
democracy. The vice president says Taiwanese people can be proud that Taiwan is
a friend to be trusted and a force for good in the world.
