The European Union
is seeking closer economic ties with Taiwan as it seeks to have a greater
presence and influence in Asia. That’s the word from a recent Nikkei Asia
article.
The article said
the EU will also seek new “digital partnerships" with Japan, South Korea,
and Singapore. This includes strengthening semiconductor value chains. The
article cited a draft Indo-Pacific strategy document that contained these
plans.
The report also
said the EU will pursue trade and investment ties with Taiwan. Taiwan is
planning to send a trade delegation to Eastern Europe.
The report cited a
growing concern about China and the threat it poses to “democratic principles
and human rights” by authoritarian regimes in the region.
The EU declined to
comment on the draft document that Nikkei Asia cited.
